Traíra potential yield was estimated to be approximately 1,000 tons. The Peruvian Amazon (64%) accounts for most of the yield, followed by the Estuary (23%) and Tocantins (9%) regions.

Most of the traíra delivered to the main fish markets in the Amazon are Hoplias malabaricus, though some other species could be involved in peripheral areas. Traíra are largely piscivores but they also feed on crustaceans. They are captured mostly in floodplain waters of whitewater rivers, but they are also abundant in blackwater and clearwater rivers.
